The Forgotten Realms

Wow, looks like we'll be getting a D&D TV series at some point. Perhaps I won't cancel our Netflix subscription just yet! Check out the news here.

Hey Look, a Dungeons & Dragons Toy...

About the only thing keeping me from sinking hundreds of dollars into this line is that the figures are six-inch scale and I have nothing else that big.

D&D Is for Nerds

So, if you eat NERDS candy, you can upload your proof-of-purchase to their website to get free NERDS-themed D&D adventures. No, gentle reader, this is not a bizarre dream you're having -- it's very, very real. You can check it out here. I don't think I've seen a box of NERDS candy in the past several decades, but I do wonder if the adventures are as gloriously goofy as the Wendy's D&D module from a while back...

But speaking of D&D and candy, this NERDS thing brought back vivid memories of going to KB Toys as a kid -- either at our local Arnot Mall or that legendary hub of commerce, MARKETPLACE MALL in Rochester -- and finding boxes of official D&D candy with actual stat blocks printed on the back. Really, was there a better time to be a D&D-loving kid than the 1980s?!

The Last God

DC and D&D -- together again! I have no idea what this is, but I will probably check it out.

Feuding Dragons

So the XFL is coming back (let's go, Guardians!) and D&D is playfully going after the newly-minted Seattle Dragons. Given the XFL's track record, however, I'm betting on D&D to be the last dragon standing in Seattle...

So they finally got home after all...

...but they speak Portuguese now.

And Venger coming through the portal disguised as a mounted police officer? That was damn cool. We need to see more of this!

TV D&D

I don't quite "get" The Big Bang Theory. I've caught bits and pieces over the years and it seems amusing enough, but I'm not sure why people go gaga over it. At any rate, apparently they had a D&D-themed episode tonight. You can read about it here.

This Is a Thing I Must Have

Sunday's Simpsons episode included a Stranger Things riff that the boys totally didn't get because, of course, they haven't seen the show. During a commercial break, I gave them a quick overview of the series and its connection to D&D. Turns out that was a timely discussion because there's going to be a new D&D starter set that ties directly into Stranger Things. Very cool indeed! And here's hoping that the upcoming season of Stranger Things features more D&D and less Dig Dug.

Lego D&D?

Remember those D&D-themed Kre-O guys that I was nuts about a few years ago? The mini-figs were pretty awesome, but the bricks didn't hold together very well, making it difficult for the boys and I to stage epic battles without entire towers crumbling at the single jab of an orc's spear. Well, it seems that we may be a step closer to a true D&D-themed Lego experience. Click here for details!

New D&D Comic

There's a new D&D comic book from IDW. Minsc of Baldur's Gate meets Strahd von Zarovich of Ravenloft! Horrific hilarity ensues!

Eh...

I bought the first issue, but I'm not especially hopeful it will improve upon the last several iterations of D&D comics. Bring back Fell's Five, I say!

Book of Vile Darkness

Remember a few years ago when a third D&D movie was announced? No? That's okay. The Book of Vile Darkness was essentially made-for-TV fare that, to my knowledge, was not released on DVD in the US. Today I found the complete flick on YouTube, in all its hammy glory...

I'm glad that the rights for D&D films have finally returned to Hasbro, who, in partnership with Warner Brothers, are now working on a big-budget D&D movie set in the Forgotten Realms world. I plan to follow the development very closely, so I'll keep you posted on the latest news.

Museum of Play

We spent today at the National Museum of Play (click here for their official website) in Rochester. The place is chock-full of fun stuff; in particular, the whole family got a kick out of all the classic arcade games. Here's a shot of us getting ready for a four-player game of Gauntlet.

The kids tended to shoot the food -- rookie mistake! -- so we didn't survive many levels.

I was also pleasantly surprised to see all the nods to D&D history. They had the first-ever D&D video game, which, as I understand it, was a pretty basic and generic dungeon-crawler -- but at the very least a spiritual ancestor of the many awesome D&D games that have followed in its wake.

Elsewhere, a display case included some notes about RPGs in general and the foundational role played by D&D itself. They had some of the earliest D&D products as well as a sampling of modules, dice, miniatures, and non-D&D RPGs. Here's one side of the display...

And here is the adjacent side...

I kind of feel like I could have pulled a better display of RPG history out of my ass...ets. My own assets, as it were. Even after discarding so many RPG products from yesteryear, I still have a lot of the most iconic items, such as the First Edition D&D PHB and the first Basic set. Still, it was great to see D&D featured in as amazing and wondrous a place as the Museum of Play.

Gaming...Nevada Style

In the casinos, gambling is called "gaming." It's not my kind of gaming. I don't have any sort of philosophical objection to gambling, but I've lived in Nevada for nearly six-and-a-half years and I've never once gambled -- not even a single pull on a grocery store slot machine (yes, we have them in grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations...). Now, at last, there's a slot machine that I might just try...the official D&D slot machine! Click here for all the details.

"Hey, look! A Dungeons & Dragons ride!"

Happy thirtieth birthday to the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon television series. I loved this show as a kid (confession: and as an adult!), and so did one of the writers at GeekDad.
