2001: A Space Odyssey

Although Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy is probably my all-time favorite cinematic experience, I think the greatest movie ever made is 2001: A Space Odyssey. I was delighted to learn that there's a board game coming out soon! Here's the link: 2001: A Space Odyssey | The Board Game

Hair Band

I feel like this board game was pretty much made for me...

All I Really Want...

Random Thursday thoughts! All I really want -- aside from some patience, a way to calm the angry voice, and maybe deliverance -- is MultiVersus, but as a miniatures game. The obvious answer is CMON's Mayhem system, but it doesn't offer the full range of WB characters. In fact, it pales in comparison to what Restoration Games is doing with their Unmatched series these days.

Near Year, New Games!

Lots of great game stuff on tap for us here in early 2023. I need to challenge the boys to a rematch of Conquest of Nerath after they crushed my evil empires last week, and Nathaniel and I are both itching to get started with the Game of Thrones board game (although the real question is whether we can get Amy and Matthew interested). Both boys got lots of Warhammer stuff for Christmas (the new Astra Militarum boxed set for Matthew and the Warhammer: The Horus Heresy core set for Nathaniel) that still needs to be put together. On the RPG front, I'm almost ready to get the boys into a full-scale Doctor Who campaign using the Doctor Who Exterminate! wargame miniatures and a hodgepodge of other minis and maps. On top of all that, my niece and nephew are interested in joining us for some D&D, so I'll be creating a new campaign set in the Druid Cycle world. I guess I really won't have time to finish panting all those 3D-printed buildings...

Conquest of Nerath

Conquest of Nerath is a board game based on 4e D&D. When it was first released, many years ago, I didn't feel that I could justify the expense. This year, however, as I was looking for cool board game ideas for Nathaniel for Christmas, I got to thinking about Nerath again and figured it would be very much to his liking, as it's a D&D product but also heavily influenced by Axis & Allies, which is probably his all-time favorite board game. I managed to get a copy of Nerath on eBay for a reasonable price, and today we got set up for our first game.

Axis & Allies in a D&D setting really is the best way to describe this game. Oh, and freakin' awesome is probably another way. I mean, just look at that map and all those delightful units! In addition to typical military units like infantry, ships, and siege engines, there are skeletons, elementals, golems, and, of course, dragons! We haven't rolled a single die yet, but we had tons of fun setting up our empires this afternoon. Nathaniel will be playing as the human and dwarven alliance of Nerath (gray pieces in the upper-left) and will be teamed with Matthew as the Vailin alliance of elves and humans (yellow pieces in the lower-right). I'll be controlling the two evil factions, the undead Karkoth (black pieces in the upper-right) and the monstrous Iron Circle (red pieces in the lower-left).

In addition to the large-scale battles between opposing armies, the game has a dungeon-exploring component, too, as certain types of units can delve into famous dungeons of D&D's history (Temple of Elemental Evil, Tomb of Horrors, etc.) and claim powerful treasures to aid their faction. It will be interesting to weigh the risks and benefits of dungeon exploration, as the heroes who venture out in search of treasure are, naturally, unavailable to help out on the battlefield.

Can't wait go get started!

Gargoyles Awakening

I just found out moments ago that there's a Gargoyles board game coming out today as a Target exclusive. I dearly love everything about the '90s Gargoyles cartoon -- its authentic New York City setting, its amazing voice cast, its deep allusions to literature and mythology -- so I will definitely need to find a way to pick up a copy of this game, pronto!

Godzilla: Tokyo Clash

The title sounds like a movie that Matt and I would've rented from the local Blockbuster during our Jolt-fueled doctoral studies in Rochester. As it stands, Godzilla: Tokyo Clash is a board game that delivers monster mayhem a la King of New York, but with gameplay that more closely approximates the action of kaiju films. I'm thinking about picking up a copy for the boys for Christmas, but this game has one major flaw: there's no Gamera. Come on, he's the friggin' Friend of All Children! The lack of Rodan is also problematic. Maybe they'll show up in a future expansion set...

NHL '94

I've always been more of a paper-and-pencil gamer than a video gamer. Keep your first-person shooters and your MMOs, and give me board games and roleplaying games any day of the week.

However, one of the few video games that has left an indelible mark upon my life is NHL '94 from EA Sports ("It's in the game!"). Every day after school, my good buddy Jason (the legendary Sir Roberts from the original Druid Cycle campaign) would come over and we'd load up '94 on the Sega Genesis. We played through countless postseasons, winning Cup after Cup. Although we were both die-hard Rangers fans, we kept coming back to the Maple Leafs. Those early '90s Toronto teams were a lot of fun. There was Doug Gilmour, Dave Andreychuk, Wendel Clark, Felix Potvin...and then, after the season, the MATS SUNDIN trade! Rocked our worlds.

Now, EA Sports is bringing back NHL '94, and I can't wait to download it. I've posted a few times here about playing the last couple of EA Sports hockey games on our Xbox, and they're very good, but nothing can compare to the original! (Well, technically it wasn't the first game in that series, but it was the one that created a decades-long phenomenon!) I can't wait to share it with my boys!

Dare We Take the Plunge?

As I had scheduled a little time off to spend with the boys during their last week of summer vacation, I thought it would be fun for us to get into a big, meaty new game. My first though was Blackstone Fortress, a cooperative dungeon-crawler set in the world of Warhammer 40k. Even if we didn't enjoy the game, we'd get a lot of use out of the minis, whether for 40k itself or for our futuristic Shattered Realm campaign. Alas, the supply chain gods did not smile upon us, as it appeared that the game would not arrive at our remote desert outpost until after I was back at work and the kids were back in school.

Fallback plan? Gloomhaven. I've been reluctant to take the plunge despite the overwhelming number of great reviews. I'm not sure why. I do love coop board/strategy games, and this one features a legacy system (i.e., players' choices in and between scenarios impact how the game's narrative unfolds over course of the campaign), which should be right up my alley. Maybe I'll be more excited once I see the box -- it's quite a box, as I understand it.

Return to Dark Tower

I missed out on their Fireball Island Kickstarter, but now Restoration Games is working on Return to Dark Tower, and I'm already drooling. I haven't seen anything about pricing yet, but damn, I really need to back this project!

(Side note: If you look back four years on this very blog, you'll find a post where I referenced the original Dark Tower board game and its classic Orson Welles television commercial, and how the game was in need of a comeback!)

Johnny...Gameseed?

I've been on the road this week, and my reputation seems to have followed me. Yesterday, one of the folks at the plant I'm visiting heard through the grapevine that I'm into strategy games, which led to a conversation about different games on the market these days. I provided a quick overview of some of today's heavy hitters -- the Catan series, the Pandemic series, etc. -- but to give them a taste of something easy and fun, I went out to a local Target last night and picked up a copy of Exploding Kittens. This afternoon, I got a bunch of colleagues together in a conference room and we played through a single game of Kittens, which they all enjoyed immensely. The laughter could be heard through the walls of the conference room, and although we might have disturbed some nearby meetings, it was well worth it. I left the game for them to enjoy and share with others. I have no doubt they'll play it again, and I hope it encourages them to look into some of the other games I mentioned. I think I ought to leave a game at every plant I visit, spreading gaming goodness across America!

Hot Stove Season

Not saying that the Xbox was a bad idea, but there's definitely less interest in board games these days at the ol' Sutton homestead. (Halo is definitely the flavor of the month!) In particular, I'm really itching to get back to our Strat-O-Matic Hall of Fame League. Somebody needs to take down Nathaniel's as-yet-undefeated juggernaut of stars from the Live Ball Era.

Merry Merry!

Hope you all have a great holiday season with your families! Here at our house, we'll have the most gaming-filled Christmas ever, as the boys are getting a long-overdue modern video game system (an Xbox One) along with a handful of games.

I'm still not a big-time video game fan, however, so I'm even more excited about some of the other gifts. They've got one of the Zombicide sequels coming, along with the highly acclaimed Betrayal at House on the Hill and an additional expansion box. Best of all, perhaps, is Forbidden Sky, the newest entry in the "Forbidden" series (following Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert, which may be the two most frequently played board games in the Sutton household). The boys will also find their stockings stuffed with the new Space Marine Heroes line of individual randomized models for Warhammer 40k. Perhaps we'll paint them up as Blood Angels in honor of the upcoming 40k animated series, Angels of Death.

Christmas can't come soon enough!

New GW Board Games

Games Workshop just announced a ton of new board games. Check out the full list here. I'm going to tag Blitz Bowl (a streamlined version of Blood Bowl) and Space Marine Adventures (a cooperative 40k board game) to remember to check back for them in a few months!

Easter Goodies

The Easter Bunny brought some gaming goodies for the boys this morning. Nathaniel got a couple of booster packs for our seldom-played Star Wars: Destiny card game and a drop pod for his Ultramarines army, but it was the new board game that Matthew got that really blew us away. It's called Downforce, a re-re-release of a race car game that's been around for ages. All four of us loved it -- it's a masterpiece of game design. Highly recommended!

Holiday Hellblasters

Nathaniel is the board game guru of the family, and he delights in games of all types. This year, Santa is bringing him a variety of gaming treats (including Pandemic, which, somehow, we don't already own yet), but he's mainly excited about a couple of vehicles to add to his Ultramarines army. I can't imagine there are too many seven-year-olds who put Warhammer 40k models at the top of their Christmas lists!

TfC: ToA

It's as tortuously titled as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and, ultimately, just as frustrating. As with the aforementioned flick, I really wanted to love Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation. After all, I'm a huge fan of turn-based D&D video games. This one, though, is perhaps too faithful in its adaptation of the D&D Adventure System family of board games, where players work cooperatively to complete quests in a randomly-created dungeon. For me, the primary drawback to TfC: ToA and its tabletop cousins is the 'Encounter' -- a game mechanic that causes nasty stuff to happen if (for whatever reason) you don't uncover a new map tile on your turn. The game hits you with so many traps, curses, and other hindrances that exploration quickly becomes tedious. In TfC: ToA, for example, you routinely get pelted by meteors falling from the sky. What more can I say?

Farewell!

No, the blog isn't going on hiatus again. I'm instead saying farewell to the house where our family has lived for, lo, these past nine years. It wasn't a great house -- it was barely an adequate house -- but it's really the only home my boys have ever known. (Yikes!)

As we prepare to spend the weekend moving into our bigger, better, brand-spankin'-new house, I'm reflecting on all the fun we had in the old place. In addition to the countless board games we played there, it was the house where I introduced my kids to D&D -- and I suppose that fact alone will always make it kind of special.

For the record, the last gaming action to be played in our weird little pink house was a Skype-based, transcontinental Shattered Realm episode with Matt and his daughter. I look forward to seeing what our first adventure in the new house will be!

Hibernation

According to the almighty Blogger, we have over 870 published posts (hat tip to Chris B. and Tim W. for their contributions). I guess I don't have any point of reference for comparison, but it feels like that's a lot of posts. It's probably enough for now.

This blog has been a great forum for writing about various topics that have come up over the last couple of years -- the Fifth Edition D&D playtest, creating a campaign-spanning Front Porch multiverse, and my family's burgeoning interest in board games, to name a few. However, I think the time has come to put the ol' game blog into hibernation for a while. Perhaps I'll resurrect it again when there's a lot of cool gaming-related news to discuss (like the upcoming D&D feature film).

Thanks for reading, and keep those dice rolling!

Tyrants of the Underdark

There's a new D&D board game on the way: Tyrants of the Underdark, from Gale Force Nine. If you like drow, you'll like this game...
